The Columbus Police Department is warning residents about a new phone scam targeting customers of a local bank branch.
BankFirst this week notified Columbus police several Lowdnes County customers received text messages recently from a source claiming to be the bank. The message tells customers there is a problem with their debit card and asks them to give their 16-digit account number for the purposes of reactivation.
BankFirst didn”t send the messages, Columbus Police Department Cpl. Donnie Elkin said Saturday.
“It”s a scam, so don”t give out your number,” Elkin said.
The Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office is investigating the scam, Elkin said, but Columbus police have not received any calls. It is unclear if any local residents have fallen victim to the scam.
