Starkville school officials are in the enviable position of having more than $3.5 million of school bond issue money to use by September or lose.
The board will meet Tuesday night to decide this issue and several other matters of business.
Among these are to swear in newly appointed board member Eric Heiselt and to elect officers for the coming year. Personnel changes are common near the end of a school year, and this meeting will see the approval of a long list of resignations, retirements and changes.
In December, the school board took a look at a wish list of remaining renovation and construction needs throughout the district. They voted to make bathroom renovations the highest priority.
District comptroller Rob Logan has estimated about $3.6 million remains from the $26 million bond issue that must be used by September 2012.
Twenty-five bathrooms in the district remain in need of renovation or major repairs, with those at Armstrong Middle School and the Rosa Stewart building at Henderson Ward Stewart in the most dire need. The total bill for bathroom renovation was estimated at $1.3 million to $1.4 million.
The board has bid out the bathroom renovations, and an update on the bid is on tonight”s agenda. Other items include a report on student suspensions and expulsions, technology throughout the agenda and Core Curriculum preparation. A consortium of states have agreed to transition to Core Curriculum in the coming years, which will bring the states closer to a national standard. Currently, states interpret national legislation to create their own standards and accountability models.
The board meets at 6 p.m. in the Greensboro Center.
