The 53-year-old man who was shot by a Columbus police officer late Wednesday is now in stable condition at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle following surgery.
Billy Beverang was allegedly armed, drunk and threatening to take his life when Investigator Raymond Hackler and another officer, Michael Harlow, found him Wednesday at about 8:30 p.m. on his back porch at 1603 Sixth St. N.
After Beverang allegedly moved to point the gun at officers, Hackler fired twice, hitting Beverang in the abdomen.
He was taken to BMH -GT, where he remained in stable condition today.
The Columbus Police Department turned over its investigation to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation per the department”s policy.
Both Hackler and Harlow were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is ongoing, said MBI spokesman Jon Kalahar.
Investigators were expected to release some information about their investigation later today, Kalahar said.
