Candidates for Lowndes County superintendent of education will answer questions in a public forum on Thursday night.
The Lowndes County Association of Educators is hosting a candidate forum, starting at 6:30 p.m., at Nissan Auditorium on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.
All six candidates have agreed to attend: Sam Allison (R), Rusty Greene (I), Roger Hill (I), Edna McGill (R), Cliff Reynolds (D) and Lynn Wright (R).
The primary election is set for Aug. 2, when several countywide offices also will be up for election. Any primary runoffs will be held Aug. 23. The general election is Nov. 8.
Mike Halford, who is in his second term as superintendent, decided not to seek re-election.
In a March talk during the Columbus-Lowndes Development Link”s quarterly luncheon, Halford highlighted the need to be prudent in electing the next superintendent, noting the Lowndes County School District is a $50 million business and the third-largest employer in the county.
