As Old Man River continues to rise, the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, in cooperation with local and state emergency management personnel, is closely monitoring Mississippi River levels, which are expected to crest May 10.
Due to what is expected to be “historic” flooding, Memphis in May International Festival organizers have announced that the annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, set for May 12-14, will be moved from its traditional riverside site to Tiger Lane in the Mid-South Fairgrounds.
All other aspects, except location, will be as scheduled. Shuttle service will be provided from downtown to the barbecue competition, which has frequently included Golden Triangle award-winning cooking teams.
The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is a featured event of the Memphis in May Festival, a month-long celebration honoring the culture, customs and heritage of a different country each year. The 2011 featured country is Belgium.
