The April 27 tornadoes that ravaged Monroe County claimed another victim on Friday, bringing the death toll to 17.
Maxine Chism, 79, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle due to multiple trauma injuries she received in the tornado that struck her home on April 27.
The tornado, which struck about 3:45 p.m., in north Monroe County, was part of an unprecedented round of tornadic activity that crossed the region and headed into Alabama and Georgia. No building along a mile-long stretch through town was unaffected, and most were destroyed.
