Mississippi State University and Starkville city officials will hold a public meeting regarding plans for a free city transit system at the Gillespie Center at 610 Gillespie St. tonight at 6 p.m. Maps of the proposed routes will be at the meeting.
Officials hope to have the city transit system up and running by January 2013.
The university-led push for an expanded transit system was initially meant to service students in town, but to apply for the Mississippi Department of Transportation grant necessary to expand MSU’s fleet, the busing system must serve low-income neighborhoods, high-density areas and public facilities, as well as provide access to health care services such as the hospital and health department.
The committee organizing the transit system encourages people to attend and provide ideas to help strengthen the push for the grant.
