The suspect in a Monday shooting at a Starkville apartment complex Tuesday turned himself into authorities and now is being held at the Oktibbeha County Jail.
Willie Jay Hogan, 24, of 2084 Sheppard Rd. in Starkville, was charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a dwelling, after he turned himself into authorities at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. Hogan is being held on a combined $40,000 bond.
Starkville Police Department Lt. Troy Outlaw said shots still were being fired when the SPD arrived at Camelot Apartments, around 8 p.m. Monday. SPD officers did not return any fire, but quickly got things under control, Outlaw noted, adding about eight shots were fired at the scene.
Gregory Dowd, 24, who lives in the complex, was shot in the chest during the incident and rushed to the Oktibbeha County Hospital, where he is listed in good condition. Outlaw said Dowd’s injuries could have been more severe had the bullet not exited the victim’s left side immediately after entering his chest. He said the SPD is continuing to investigate.
SPD Officer Josh Wilson could not confirm whether Hogan acted alone or identify a motive for the shooting.
