JACKSON — Officials in Jackson are mourning the death of a police officer killed in a highway accident while he was on duty over the weekend.
Officer Bruce Jacob was struck by a car Saturday on Interstate 55. Police Chief Lindsey Horton said Jacob had retrieved a barbecue grill that had fallen onto the highway. As he was putting it into the trunk of his cruiser he was hit by another car.
The investigation into the accident is continuing. The name of the driver involved had not been released as of Monday morning.
Jacob was 35 years old. He had entered Jackson’s police academy in 2009.
Horton said the department will review policies involving debris removal from the interstate. However, he said there is no indication that Jacob did anything wrong.
