STARKVILLE — The wife of a hunter found shot to death last week south of Maben was still behind bars this morning on a $125,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing took place Monday afternoon at the Oktibbeha County Jail for Verina Marie Childs, 37, who was charged with murder in the death of her husband, Douglas Marion Childs, 32, on Nov. 22 off Hawkins Road in western Oktibbeha County. The couple lived at the corner of Jeff Peay and Hawkins roads, not far from the scene of the shooting.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Department Chief Deputy George Carrithers on Tuesday said Douglas Childs was found shot to death by a fellow hunter at the power lines along Hawkins Road, south of the intersection with Jeff Peay Road. Carrithers wouldn”t disclose additional details about the incident, citing court rules against pretrial publicity, but did say Douglas Childs was shot in the back with a rifle.
“It turns out the wife was the one who shot him,” Carrithers said last week when Verina Childs was arrested.
Childs” case is scheduled to go in front of the Oktibbeha County Grand Jury in January, Carrithers said.
A relative who answered the door at the Childs home Tuesday declined to comment.
“We”re just doing what we can,” she said. “A lot of praying.”
