The Kroger in West Point will close within a month.
Teresa Dickerson, community affairs and public relations manager for the Kroger Delta Division, confirmed to The Dispatch on Wednesday that the grocery store at 411 W. Main St. will close “on or before August 15.”
Why?
Each year, Dickerson said, the Ohio-based grocery chain evaluates each of its 2,500-plus locations.
“Unfortunately, (we) had to make the hard decision to close this location,” she said.
The West Point grocery store employs 54 people. Those employees will be offered positions with other nearby Krogers, according to Dickerson.
Speaking of potential closings, there have been rumors that Logan’s Roadhouse on 18th Avenue North in Columbus may be shutting down. We reached out to Susan Morgenstern, a spokesperson for the Tennessee-based restaurant chain, to see if that is true.
It is not.
“We do not have any plans to close the restaurant,” Morgenstern said.
Moving on.
A unique new business has opened in the Golden Triangle. It is called The Grocery Bag.
The owner is Omar Jones, a 35-year-old Columbus native who for quite some time has been interested in opening a business with low start-up costs. After doing some research, he started The Grocery Bag a little more than a month ago. We asked how many employees he had. He responded it was just “me and my car.”
Here’s what he offers: Grocery shopping convenience to Columbus and Lowndes County residents.
His clients can email or text a grocery list, along with their name, address, phone number and favorite grocery store, to Jones, and he will go purchase each item on the list and then drive it to their home in his Mercury Grand Marquis. The client then reimburses Jones for the groceries, plus a service fee.
Fees vary.
