WEST POINT — A West Point woman has received a life sentence after being convicted of killing a man in 2009.
A Clay County jury on Friday convicted Tameshia Shelton, 37, of Mhoon Valley Road, of murder. Prosecutors charged her with the crime following the shooting death of Danelle Young, 21, of Forest.
Young was found shot to death in the yard of a Mhoon Valley Road home in October 2009. A .22-caliber pistol was also found in the yard.
Ramirez Williams, chief deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, investigated. Shelton was eventually charged.
Following a four-day trial last week, a jury deliberated for approximately two hours before returning a guilty verdict.
Shelton was sentenced to life behind bars. She will be eligible for parole when she is 65, according to prosecutors.
“The family of Danelle Young waited a long time for justice, but I believe they think the wait well worth their while,” District Attorney Forrest Allgood said in a statement. “It was a team effort. Had it not been for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, nothing would ever have been accomplished.”
