HATTIESBURG — Six of the men accused of stealing a zoo’s flamingo for a fraternity scavenger hunt have been accepted into a pretrial program that can eventually erase their court records.
The Hattiesburg American reports that the program includes community service, restitution, fees and other costs. Once the men complete it, prosecutors will drop grand larceny and conspiracy charges.
The female flamingo taken from the Hattiesburg Zoo and her mate both were injured in the Oct. 6 incident and had to be euthanized.
A Forrest County grand jury indicted nine people. All were either members or pledges of a fraternity at the University of Southern Mississippi at the time of the theft.
