MACON — A Shuqualak man has been charged with capital murder in the March shooting of a Macon gas station attendant.
Jonathan Shumaker, 24, was indicted by a September Noxubee County Grand Jury and served this week. He is charged in the murder of Kristopher Haywood while in commission of a robbery.
Haywood, 28, was murdered on March 2 while working at the Local Express Station on Jackson Street in Macon. He was struck with two shotgun blasts to the head around 10:30 p.m. Haywood died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson March 4.
Shumaker was also charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He was found in possession of a shotgun, according to the indictment. He is currently being held in Rankin County jail.
Shumaker’s girlfriend, Elizabeth Layne Reed, 19, of Shuqualak; Justin Williams, 19, of Macon; and Justin’s brother, Joshua Williams, 17, were also charged with capital murder in March. Indictments have yet to be served to Reed or the Williams brothers following the September grand jury.
District Attorney Forrest Allgood said his office is a long way from deciding whether or not to pursue the death penalty in the case. He said it will depend on input from the victim’s family. A trial date has yet to be set.
