JACKSON — Twelve Mississippi airports will benefit from more than $4.15 million in grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation to help with facility upgrades.
U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, in a news release Monday, said the projects are in addition to 19 grants awarded in March for other projects.
“These grants make important investments in the safety and efficiency of Mississippi airports,” Cochran said.
The grants include $97,190 for the rehabilitation of the airport apron at Columbus-Lowndes County Airport and $73,675 for the installation of a perimeter fence at George M. Bryan Airport in Starkville.
Additionally the grants will support projects at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport, for runway rehabilitation; construction of a terminal building at Philadelphia Municipal Airport; apron, runway and taxiway rehabilitation and an update of the airport master plan study at McCharen Field Airport in West Point; and airport drainage improvements and installation of perimeter fencing at Poplarville-Pearl River County Airport.
Other projects include work at airports in Louisville, Lexington, Winona and Montgomery County, Copiah County, Natchez-Adams County and the University-Oxford Airport.
“Each of these local airports will be better equipped to serve Mississippians with important infrastructure upgrades,” Wicker said.
Funding for the grants is drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes and other, similar revenue sources.
