A West Point couple is dead following a house fire.
Firefighters carried Jack Golson, 84, and his wife, Sara Golson, 80, out of their Lone Oak Circle home Monday morning. They were alive at the time but both later succumbed to injuries, according to Alvin Carter, the coroner of Clay County.
West Point Fire Chief Ken Wilbourne said the call came in about 10:30 a.m. Responding crews found the north end of the home — including three doorways — involved in fire. Wilbourne said firefighters used a window to enter a bedroom, where both victims were found — one near the window, one near the doorway.
They were both transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point, where they were later pronounced dead. The Daily Times Leader, a newspaper in West Point, reported smoke inhalation as the cause of death.
Carter said no foul play is suspected. An investigation into the cause of the fire continued at press time today.
A neighbor told The Dispatch the Golsons had lived in West Point more than 40 years.
