J.C. Johnson has operated in Mississippi as a pharmacist since obtaining his degree in 1949. But at 90 years old, he is preparing to retire.
Plaza Drugs in West Point, located at 545 E. Main St., will be closing after nearly 50 years of service.
Johnson worked in Greenwood with Barrett’s Drugstore, now Barrett-Hodges Drugs, in 1949 and remained there for seven years before moving to West Point. When in West Point, he entered a partnership with two other pharmacists before accomplishing his dream of owning his own business in 1967. During this partnership, J.C. served on the State Board of Pharmacy from 1960-1964 under Paul Johnson. Johnson’s drug store has continued to run with the assistance of his son, John Johnson, and other family members.
J.C. said his son would probably have kept the store open if not for the increasing demands on privately owned pharmacies. Plaza Drugs is holding a 75 percent off sale and will close its doors on Friday.
In Starkville, Frios Gourmet Pops opened Tuesday. The store is located on Main Street in what was Dawghouse’s dining room extension and is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and from noon-6 p.m. Sundays. The popsicle shop offers all-natural flavored popsicles with options ranging from a watermelon puree to a combination of Kit-Kat, Snickers and Butterfinger bars. Due to the natural ingredients used in the frozen treats’ preparation, Frios Pops range from 50 calories to 200 calories in their richest popsicles. Frios Gourmet Pops is based in Gadsden, Alabama, and sources its ingredients from local farmer and suppliers.
Chili’s in both Starkville and Columbus closed up shop on Wednesday, July 27. This closure leaves Golden Triangle residents with the next closest option of Tupelo for a Chili’s dining experience.
