A Starkville man was sentenced to eight years in federal prison Wednesday after pleading guilty this spring to one count of conspiring to support the Islamic State.
Muhammad Dakhlalla, 23, was also given 15 years of post-release probation by U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock.
He faced up to 20 years in prison, an up to $250,000 fine and lifetime probation.
Dakhlalla was arrested last year when he and his fiancee, Jaelyn Young, attempted to leave the country via the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, fly to Turkey and cross its border into Syria.
Like Dakhlalla, Young, 20, pleaded guilty in March to one count of conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist organization.
She received a 12-year sentence, which also carries 15 years of supervised release with mental health treatments and unannounced computer checks, on Aug. 11.
