A Mississippi state senator’s son is facing another Golden Triangle felony charge, according to court documents.
Colton Younger, the 24-year-old son of Sen. Charles Younger of Columbus, has been indicted for robbery in Clay County, according to circuit court documents. This adds to a felony drug indictment he faces in Lowndes County that has yet to go to trial.
The Clay County Circuit Court’s docket for the October term, which begins next week, indicates Colton Younger is scheduled to go before Mississippi 16th Circuit Judge Lee Coleman on Monday for the robbery charge. A trial is unlikely this term — Younger was indicted by a Clay County grand jury in April and pleaded not guilty to the charge on July 29. The most recent document in the case, filed in August, is a request for discovery information from Younger’s attorney, Rodney Ray.
Younger is accused of robbing the Fast Break convenience store on Dec. 21, 2015, according to District Attorney Scott Colom. The store is located at the corner of Highway 45 and Church Hill Road in West Point. The indictment states that Younger took a “large amount of money” from the store.
While the indictment says Colton Younger robbed the victim by putting them in “fear of imminent harm to a person,” it doesn’t mention the use of a weapon. The victim, however, in an impact statement, said she was “shaken up from getting a gun pointed at” her.
“Just like any other young man, he’s gotten himself in trouble,” Sen. Younger told The Dispatch on Wednesday. “He’s gotten some help, and he’s looking at joining the National Guard.”
Lowndes County law enforcement officials arrested Colton Younger in May 2015 on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended driver’s license.
Prior to the arrest, Younger was allegedly found to have two pills of OxyContin — which contains the drug oxycodone. Possession of the drug without a prescription is a felony.
Colton was indicted by a Lowndes County grand jury for possession of oxycodone in October 2015. That case has been continued until Nov. 29.
