Emergency responders contained a large brush fire after several hours of effort in a wooded area near the Sunset subdivision east of Starkville Saturday night.
Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said though the fire spread through several acres of brush, no buildings were damaged.
Rosenhan said authorities assume the fire was started accidentally. The Central Oktibbeha Fire Department and the Mississippi Forestry Commission responded to the scene at about 9 p.m. after area residents reported that someone was lighting fireworks in the woods.
Oktibbeha County is among the 52 counties in Mississippi included in a burn ban issued by Gov. Phil Bryant on Oct. 11. The ban is in effect until further notice.
Rosenhan said in addition to the state-level ban, the county ban the board of supervisors issued earlier this month has been extended through Oct. 28.
