A local man is being treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after being shot in the chest in Columbus Thursday night.
The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. near Waterworks Road and Seventh Avenue North, according to a press release from the Columbus Police Department.
WTVA has reported police arrested two suspects — 30-year-old Morris Lanier and 26-year-old Chris Rice, both of Columbus — in the incident. However, CPD Chief Oscar Lewis said the news station did not receive that information through an official source, and he would not confirm it by press time.
“As of [this] morning …, no suspects’ names are being released, and no one has been charged,” Lewis told The Dispatch through city Public Information Officer Joe Dillon. “The case is under a very active investigation.”
Lanier was booked for disorderly conduct at about 1 a.m. today and released two hours later after posting $412 bond, a Lowndes County Adult Detention Center official told The Dispatch. Rice has not been booked there since October 2015.
The victim was conscious at the scene and able to talk to police about the shooting, the press release said. CPD does not know his condition now, according to Capt. Brent Swan.
Anyone with information is asked to contact CPD at 244-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
