Ward 2 Alderman Lisa Wynn became the final incumbent to qualify for this year’s municipal election cycle after she filed her candidate’s paperwork Wednesday at City Hall.
Wynn, 48, previously announced her intent to run for a second term last year but had not yet officially qualified for the race.
She will face former Ward 2 Alderman Sandra Sistrunk in the May 2 Democratic primary. The winner of that election will become alderman unless a Republican qualifies and forces a general election showdown in June.
In an email to The Dispatch, Wynn touted her successes as alderman, including addressing infrastructure, supporting increased pay for city employees, lobbying for $200 million in development projects and voting in favor of the Golden Triangle Development LINK-backed industrial park.
“I listened to many concerns as I campaigned door-to-door. After being elected, I did a comprehensive assessment of Ward 2. Many of the annexed areas were plagued with infrastructure problems,” she said in the email. “As the alderperson for this ward, I have addressed every area that warranted much needed improvements, such as street repairs, street overlaying, traffic flow devices and drainage issues.”
Wynn beat Sistrunk, 66, in a 2013 runoff election 217-191 after both tied at 181 votes in that year’s Democratic primary.
Sistrunk served as Ward 2’s alderman from 2009-13 after she beat Republican Rodney Lincoln with 51 percent of the vote.
