A Columbus man faces a sexual battery charge after police say he assaulted a child left in his care while the mother was at work.
Columbus Police Department received a report of the alleged incident, which occurred on April 5 at a private residence. The suspect, identified as Deandre Hughes, 29, was taking care of two children at the mother’s home in east Columbus and is accused of sexually assaulting one the children. According to Capt. Brent Swan, CPD notified school officials on the morning the assault was reported. Officers also contacted the Mississippi Department of Human Services, which conducted a parallel investigation.
Police, citing the trauma caused to the family of the victim, did not release further details of the incident.
A warrant for Hughes’ arrest was issued Wednesday and Hughes turned himself in to CPD investigators Thursday.
Hughes has been released from Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, after posting $75,000 bond.
