Golfers Saturday enjoyed Columbus Air Force Base”s Whispering Pines Golf Course during the 8th Annual Super Scramble, hosted in part by Sonic Drive-In.
On the nine-hole golf course, which features new Mississippi Express greens, 18 four-person teams played. The winning team consisted of Randy Bailey, Jason Kalfus, Darrell Petters and Matt Matthes.
Proceeds from the event benefited the CAFB golf course and CAFB Morale, Welfare and Recreation program projects for base military members and their families, CAFB officials said.
Additional tournament sponsors included, Premier Ford, Fox 99.9 FM, Hank”s Championship Barbecue, WCBI-TV, Dyncorp International, Q103.1 FM, Mix 106.1 FM and Verizon Wireless.
“It was phenomenal, but the heat was horrible,” Pam Wickham, marketing director for CAFB and an avid golfer who played in the tournament, said of the scramble. “It was great. It was a nice tournament. We really appreciate what the sponsors did for us to be able to put this on. The course is in great shape with the new greens and stuff and it was a great tournament. The players just raved over it, how great the condition of the course was.
“This year we had to turn people away,” she added of the tournament”s popularity. “That will make us look at doing two shifts next years, if the response is that good, and I think it will be.”
