Officials of the Oktibbeha County School District unanimously approved the $12.6 million budget for the 2010-2011 school year Monday night.
The meeting was delayed by 30 minutes as some of the board forgot about the special called meeting. Cynthia Ward arrived early, but the meeting couldn”t start until Board President Curtis Snell and then Charles Avant arrived to form a quorum. Herman Bush arrived after the public meeting concluded and the board went into closed session.
Superintendent James Covington presented the budget, which has projected revenues of $12.6 million and projected expenditures of $11.8 million.
“I like these numbers,” Avant said. “It looks good if we get the revenues we”re expecting.”
At last Monday”s public hearing, Covington described the budget as very tight.
“We”re simply just tightening the belt even more,” Covington said then. “The belt was already tight.”
Avant made the motion to approve the budget, and was seconded by Ward. It passed 3-0.
The next order of business was to approve the resolution to the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors asking them to assess the necessary local tax millage to fund the budget. This motion by Ward and second by Avant passed unanimously as well. County school taxes will remain at the state-capped 55 mill rate.
The board approved per diem and travel matters and received some information on 16th Section land leases from Covington. Then they went into closed session to discuss personnel issues. They area set to meet again at 6 p.m. Sept. 6.
