STARKVILLE — Starkville residents soon will be able to see their tax dollars at work.
Parents for Public Schools and the Starkville School District are hosting the “Building for the Future Showcase” on Aug. 22 to celebrate the completion of $26.5 million in additions and renovations to four SSD schools.
During the Aug. 22 event, which lasts from 2-4 p.m., the public will have the opportunity to tour newly completed additions at Sudduth Elementary, Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary, Armstrong Middle and Starkville High.
The renovations and additions were paid for with a $26.5 million bond issue, approved by city voters in 2007.
The bond issue funded a two-classroom addition and new physical education facility at Sudduth Elementary, a new classroom addition connecting Henderson and Ward Stewart schools and the renovation of Henderson school, a new sixth-grade classroom wing and cafeteria expansion at Armstrong Middle School and a new addition, including classrooms and renovation of the original 1965 two-story classroom wing, at Starkville High School.
“It makes me proud to live in Starkville because we all pulled together and made something good happen,” said Roy Pollard, co-chair of the 2007 bond issue campaign. “That”s a great feeling, especially when you can actually see the results of everyone”s hard work.”
“With the completion of the additions to our schools, we can be proud of where we send our children each morning, as well as take pride in our children”s education,” said Ann Carr, who co-chaired the 2007 Building for the Future Campaign with Pollard. “The bottom line is helping our children reach their potential academically.”
During the Aug. 22 event, a brief ceremony will be held at each school, where the parents who chaired the building committees will reflect briefly on the completion of the construction projects.
The schedule of ceremonies is as follows:
- Sudduth Elementary School at 2:15 p.m.
- Henderson Ward Stewart at 2:45 p.m.
- Armstrong Middle School at 3:15 p.m.
- Starkville High School at 3:45 p.m.
Visitors may attend each ceremony, or they can come and go during the two hours, choosing to see one school or visiting all of them. Refreshments will be served at each school.
