Two suspects have been formally charged after Columbus police arrested them in connection with a Wednesday robbery at a child care center in north Columbus.
Johnnie Summers, 36, and Trellis Campbell, 19, both of Columbus, have been charged with armed robbery and were arraigned in Columbus Municipal Court Monday.
According to Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton, Summers entered the child care center, located in the area of Byrnes Circle off Waterworks Road, and robbed an employee at gunpoint while wearing a mask. Campbell waited in the car and drove Summers both to and from the scene. The two men knew each other and lived together at the same address, Shelton said.
No one was injured in the robbery, Shelton said. However he said nine children were present at the daycare at the time. Shelton declined to specify which day care center Summers entered, citing a department policy not to identify victims of crime. There are multiple child care centers in the area.
A Columbus Police Department press release sent last week said the robbery occurred at about 12:45 p.m. and that one of the suspects was in custody within two hours.
Both suspects’ bonds were set at $100,000. They are still in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. A court date was set for June 6.
