Columbus Police Department Capt. Stacey Deans, head of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division, has died.
Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green confirmed Deans, 53, died of natural causes Tuesday morning at Baldwyn Nursing Facility in Baldwyn.
Deans had been on medical leave from CPD since early May after a severe spinal chord compression left him mostly paralyzed on his left side. He underwent surgery at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo on May 6 and was in intensive care for more than a week after the surgery. He left the hospital in June and was undergoing physical therapy at the facility in Baldwyn.
Deans had more than 25 years of law enforcement experience. He was hired to lead CPD’s investigative division in May 2018 and started working June 1, 2018.
While Deans was away on medical leave, Cpl. Eric Lewis is leading CID. Lewis was interim CID head before Deans was hired last year.
