STARKVILLE — The Starkville Police Department is investigating a weekend shooting which left three skateboarders injured at Sudduth Elementary School.
The group was skating on the new pavement outside Sudduth Elementary just after midnight Sunday when they were approached by multiple suspects, SPD Lt. Mark Ballard said. The suspects then opened fire on the skateboarders, although police are still investigating a motive and the circumstances which led to the shooting, Ballard said.
One of the victims flagged down a Starkville Police Department officer passing nearby shortly after the shooting. Two of the victims were treated for their injuries at the scene while the third was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Police are not releasing the identities of the victims due to concerns for their safety, but did say they were teenagers.
Investigators are actively searching for the suspects, though Ballard would release few details because it is an ongoing investigation.
“We do have some good leads we”ve developed,” he said.
No Sudduth teachers, students or staff were involved in the incident, Ballard stressed.
Anyone with information on the shooting can contact the Starkville Police Department at 662-323-4131 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151. Calls to the Crime Stoppers tip line are confidential and can lead to a reward of up to $1,000 if the information leads to an arrest.
“We are definitely looking for the public”s help on this one,” Ballard said.
