A Lowndes County man who had been missing since Wednesday was found dead in Bessemer, Alabama.
Bessemer police found the body of Michael Jones, 45, in an abandoned house Friday, shortly after officers found Jones' pickup parked on a different street six blocks away, according to a statement police gave the WBRC television station. He had been shot.
Jones, an employee of Steel Dynamics west of Columbus, left work at about 7:24 a.m. Wednesday presumably headed for his home in the New Hope Road/Ben Christopher Road area, Lowndes County sheriff's deputies previously released. He did not return to work at 6 p.m. that day as scheduled, according to his relatives.
In a prepared statement issued Saturday morning, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said his office is working with Bessemer police on the investigation.
"(We) will continue to do everything possible to help them solve this case," Hawkins said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Jones family. This is not the outcome we hoped for."
