A continuing investigation by Mississippi State University”s police department has determined that a campus crime reported earlier by a former student was false.
As a result, Kenneth Hood, 28, of Starkville, is being charged with filing a false police report, according to Detective Brad Massey of the MSU Police Department.
The subject had told investigators that he was assaulted and robbed in the first-floor restroom of McCool Hall at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Filing a false report is a serious charge,” said Thomas Bourgeois, the university”s dean of students, adding that conviction can result in up to a $1,000 fine and a year in prison.
He said false reports are dangerous to the general campus population because they unnecessarily can divert valuable police resources, among other reasons.
“We treat false reports as seriously as we treat crime reports,” Bourgeois said.
The male subject reported to police that he was accosted by two black males in the first-floor restroom of McCool Hall. The victim described both of his assailants as approximately 6 feet tall with medium builds. One was wearing a Navy hoodie, khaki cargo pants and blue shoes with white laces. The other he described as wearing a white hoodie, blue cargo pants and white Nikes, according to MSU police.
