Two people have been arrested for domestic violence after two separate Saturday night shootings in Columbus.
Breeze Whitmore, 22, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated assault-domestic violence. She is accused of shooting a romantic partner in her Forrest Boulevard home Saturday at 8 p.m. after the two argued, Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said. The victim was flown to an out-of-town hospital and is still being treated for his injuries.
Then on Monday, Devario McCaa, 29, of Columbus, turned himself in to Columbus Police Department for aggravated assault. Shelton said McCaa shot an individual on Gregory Road at about 10 p.m. Saturday. The shooting was in retaliation for the victim apparently beating up his girlfriend, a family member of McCaa’s.
“(He) was giving him some of what he was giving his girlfriend,” Shelton said.
Shelton said in that case, the victim was treated and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for non life-threatening injuries. Investigators are still determining whether to charge him with domestic violence.
Shelton stressed that these were isolated incidents not related to multiple shootings that took place the weekend of Oct. 16-18 — one on Brown Street and one near East Columbus Gym — which police are still actively investigating.
He said he has deployed a special four-officer unit on weekends to back up the regular shift of police officers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, to help curb violence. That special detail helped respond to both domestic violence shootings over the weekend, he said.
Both Whitmore and McCaa are currently in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center with no bond set at this time.
