A Columbus man and a Hamilton woman have been charged with an October carjacking in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Highway 12 in Starkville.
The Starkville Police Department responded to a report of a carjacking at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 22 in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot at 118 Highway 12 W. and determined a male, with the assistance of a female, had stolen a Ford Crown Victoria from an individual, according to the SPD. Shortly thereafter, an Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office deputy spotted the stolen vehicle and pursued it toward Columbus on Highway 82 East. The suspect then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Detectives from the SPD worked in conjunction with the Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office and the Columbus Police Department to locate the female who was suspected of aiding in the carjacking and identified her as Brianna Colette Payne, 22, whose last known address was 40008 Mt. Olive Drive, Hamilton. Payne turned herself in to the Starkville Police Department and was arrested Monday at 10 p.m. She was charged with accessory to armed carjacking and her bond was set at $20,000.
The second suspect was identified shortly thereafter as Byron Levar Perry, 24, whose last known address was 1616 11th Avenue, Columbus. Perry turned himself in to SPD detectives Tuesday at 10 a.m. Based on Perry”s confession and physical evidence of the crime, he was charged with armed carjacking and bond was set at $30,000, according to the SPD. Perry has pending charges of felony fleeing from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office.
