When five Mississippi State University military veterans take to the stage this weekend, they will become the latest participants in a growing national movement.
The Telling Project has, since 2008, been producing “Telling,” a live performance in which military veterans, after extensive interview, performance training and rehearsal, stage the “telling” of their stories of life and the military for their communities. Having performed thus far in Eugene, Ore., Portland, Ore., Seattle, Sacramento, Calif., and Washington, “Telling: Starkville, MS” will bring the number of performances of “Telling” to over 20 in less than three years. The number of people who have attended these performances is in the tens of thousands, which does not include viewers of live-streamed performances carried on NPR and MTV.com.
The Starkville edition will take place Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m., in Lee Hall”s Bettersworth Auditorium. Admission is free.
Marcus Boykin, Michael Campbell, Lewis Howard, Chris Keane and Lamarris Williams represent five of Mississippi”s finest. They have had extraordinary experiences in the service of their country, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and here at home — experiences which they will speak of with candor in “Telling: Starkville, MS.” They are also simply citizens of Starkville, students, husbands, co-workers, friends and acquaintances. What they carry in their experiences they carry for all: the citizens of Starkville, of Mississippi and of the country. “Telling: Starkville, MS” is an opportunity for them to share some of this, and for the people of Starkville, MSU and the state of Mississippi to hear and understand.
