A 12-year-old Oktibbeha County boy is expected to survive a suspected accidental gunshot wound he suffered Tuesday at his home in Clayton Village.
The boy, whom the Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office is not identifying because of his age, was out of surgery and “doing fine” as of this morning, Oktibbeha County Sheriff Dolph Bryan said.
“It looks like he”s going to all right,” Bryan said. “Maybe that”s our Christmas gift this year.”
According to Bryan, the boy and his 9-year-old brother were at their home on Cannon Road without parental supervision when the phone rang and it was a number the pair didn”t recognize. The 9-year-old told investigators the pair did not answer the phone, but did retrieve their parents” .410-gauge shotgun from a closet.
At about 11:30 a.m., the 12-year-old dropped the shotgun and it went off, Bryan said. The shot struck the boy in his hand and abdomen. He was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center for surgery. Attempts to find out if the boy was still a patient at the hospital this morning were unsuccessful.
The Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office has gun locks available for the public, Bryan said. For more information, call 662-323-2421 or stop by the Sheriff”s Office at 111 Dr. D.L. Conner Drive in Starkville.
