Tabor Construction and Development has spent more than a year renovating the former Borden milk plant at the corner of Montgomery and Lampkin Streets for restaurant, retail and storage space.
Now, the Starkville-based company is hoping to add condominiums to the massive, two-story structure.
Tabor will present a conditional use request to the Starkville planning and zoning commission tonight to allow multi-family use in a C-2 general business district. The applicant wants to construct as many as eight condominiums of varying square footages, most likely a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, in an approximately 12,100-square-foot area on the building”s second floor.
If the conditional use request is approved by the planning and zoning commission, it still must go before the city”s Board of Aldermen for consideration.
Tabor purchased the former Borden plant in 2009 and has since renovated it for Central Station Grill, Boardtown Bikes, interior design firm Something Southern and a climate-controlled mini-storage facility, all of which have since moved in to the building.
In August 2010, Tabor purchased a .37-acre strip of land from the southern adjacent property owner and had it rezoned to C-2, then incorporated it into his property with a “Phase 1″ condominium plat. Tabor hoped to accumulate enough property to accommodate minimum parking requirements without having to utilize off-site areas.
Tabor now has 122 parking spaces on site, well over the city”s parking code requirements.
While Tabor plans eight “luxury” condominiums on the building”s second floor, the space also old be used for commercial use, or a combination of the two.
The Starkville planning and zoning commission meets tonight at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
