Starkville school officials and the public education community will honor outgoing board member Bill Weeks with a reception Tuesday night before the regular board meeting.
Weeks has served on the school board for 20 years and has been described as a champion for public education. The school board is hosting the reception from 5-6 p.m. to honor Weeks for his service. Weeks” term will end March 5.
At 6 p.m., the board will begin their regular monthly board meeting, typically held on the first Tuesday of each month. Both events will be held in the Greensboro Center.
Among the items of business are a review of information the board request of district controller Rob Logan. The district has a revolving 3-mill, 10-year tax note that can be used for a variety of purposes. The district has around 2.85 mills available of 3 mill/10 year notes.
“A mill in FY2010-2011 generates around $243,500 per year. If the district used all of the 2.85 mills, it would generate about $694,000 for a principle and interest payment,” the agenda states.
The board has been asked to compensate Jessie Collier $2,366.20 for him transporting his own children to school for less than a year “while the issue of where his children should attend school was being resolved … This is in response to Mr. Collier and Bear Atwood with the ACLU coming before the board in January 2011,” the official agenda states.
The board will consider making up the three days of school missed from bad weather by shifting the end of the third nine weeks to March 11, with quarterly exams running from March 8-11. Spring break remains March 14-18.
The board also will consider a request to construct a pavilion on the Henderson Ward Stewart playground, with that school”s PTA paying $20,000 of the project”s total cost of $43,861.54.
The board also will be given a list of administrators recommended for employment for the 2011-2012 school year.
