Give McComb School District Superintendent Dr. Cederick Ellis an “A” for enthusiasm, and if the district’s innovative school at Summit works as he envisions it, give him an “A” there too.
Ellis was persuasive at the McComb Rotary Club last week, outlining what already has been made public about a model school designed to “meet students where they are.”
He reported that 298 applications have been received to attend the K-4 grades at the student-centered learning school, which begins the coming school year.
It will accommodate only 250 the first year, so a lottery is scheduled April 13 to see who will attend. The 48 who aren’t selected will be placed on a waiting list.
Curriculum will be based on instructional levels, not traditional grade levels. Students must master required skills at one instructional level before going to the next. Hence a child could be at a second grade level in one subject and fourth grade level on another and still be challenged on what he or she is able to accomplish in each subject area.
