Appreciates column
I applaud Rufus Ward’s column in Sunday’s Dispatch entitled “Removing flags and burning books.” It was, I believe, historically accurate and very informative.
I especially liked his words, “Besides the intolerance of differing views of history, the removal of old monuments reeks of a form of ethnic cleansing. … The removal of historic monuments is tantamount to book burning. Will we next go into libraries and purge by fire the books we do not like?”
Mississippians deserve a flag that we all can respect, and I favor changing it, but to dig up graves and destroy historical monuments is opening up, not only graves, but old wounds long since healed. We have more important issues to debate.
