Voters should decide flag issue
The right way to determine if a change needs to be made in our state flag is to put it to a vote state-wide — to change or not to change, as we did some time ago.
The governor is wise to not make knee jerk decisions about it and not to try dictating from Jackson on this issue as if he is the Big Kahuna or something. I think our representatives and senators from this area are wise enough as well to see that this issue is one to be decided by a majority vote.
I think when there are no term limits on mayor positions it tends to make some of them think they can act as kings or dictators after a while in office. They all work not just for those who elected them but for those who didn’t vote for them as well.
I think there should be term limits for mayors, county supes and councilmen. Eight years for all three positions should be maximum time to be in office. And this pension for life thing they get needs to be looked at as well. That should not happen for part time workers, period.
Lowndes county has one supervisor – I think it’s district 5 — that’s been in office longer than the age of half it’s citizens. Not good. Eight years is long enough to serve. Evidently the position pays way too much and that’s probably why folks want to make it a career and stay there until they die.
At the present time I would vote to keep our state flag as is if it comes to that. We did the same thing a few years back so it’s probably a little too soon to do it again. I say we should wait until 2017 to put it on a ballot again.
