One solution to teacher shortage
Sunday’s paper had two items about the teacher shortage in the state and specifically in Columbus.
Columbus School Board President Angela Verdell is quoted as saying that it would be worse to hire uncertified teachers than to use substitute teachers.
This points out one of the huge problems with our state’s rules for teacher certification. An unemployed or retired professor with a doctorate in math, science, or foreign language would not be qualified to teach in the Columbus public schools unless he/she took the required classes needed for certification.
I think it would be much wiser to make exceptions and hire these highly educated people over substitute teachers who are usually not as well-trained.
