What to Watch For: Week 2 Prep Football

Scott Walters

While it is still very early in the prep football season, that does not mean that we can't go ahead and get excited about some matchups.

Region play is still several weeks away from most schools. However, we will still be learning a lot tonight and Friday.

Here are the five things we will be watching in Week Two:

Yellow Jackets or Chargers

1. Can Starkville shake up the statewide rankings?

Oxford ranks ahead of Starkville in the Mississippi Association of Coaches rankings, the Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and the Associated Press rankings.

It is a safe bet that many people casting ballots did not see first-hand Starkville's stunningly-easy 51-19 win over Noxubee County in its season opener.

The Yellow Jackets have loaded up with a brutal schedule which should make them ready for the Class 6A playoffs.

We will find out if Starkville has enough in reserve to beat one of Class 5A's favorites this week.

Green Wave or Tigers

2. Can West Point finally beat South Panola?

When West Point and South Panola announced the renewal of their series in 2011, the announcement was met with a lot of buzz.

In the end, South Panola has proven the better team with three straight wins in the series, including two by 20+ points.

Still, championships are not won in August. Both teams are playing to get better.

Confederates or Lions

3. Is Caledonia for real?

It is not uncommon for Caledonia to start off with some quality non-region wins. Things then get much tougher when the likes of Noxubee County appear on the region schedule.

Beating Heritage Academy was an impressive start for the Confederates. This Friday night, Caledonia will attempt to take down Hamilton.

We will learn more Friday but not as much as we will learn later.

Raiders or Patriots

4. Will Oak Hill Academy and Marshall Academy burn out the scoreboard lights?

Let's see -- Marshall Academy beat Oak Hill Academy 48-42 in overtime last season.

In their respective openers last week, Marshall Academy scored 70 in a 70-22 win over Kirk Academy, while Oak Hill Academy scored 41 in a 41-7 win over Hartfield Academy.

Pack a lunch and don't look for a final score until late in the evening.

Trojans or Bulldogs

5. Will New Hope win its opener under new coach Kris Pickle?

New Hope begins the Pickle era against a highly-regarded Aberdeen squad Friday night.

Aberdeen has already served notice it is ready to contend in Class 3A with a solid win over Shannon in its opener.

Pickle has continued to install new systems during last week's open date.
