What to Watch For: Week 5 Prep Football

Scott Walters

The intensity is about to pick up for some area prep football teams.

Some teams are already midway through region play and face critical games to stay alive in the playoff race.

Other teams are still playing tune-up games getting ready for region play which will roll around either late this month or the first of next month.

With so many teams in transition, we still have some intriguing matchups.

Here are the five things we will watch in Week Five:

Wildcats or Falcons

1. Will Columbus finally break into the win column?

It appears that this may be the best season yet for the teams in Class 6A, Region 2 play.

Columbus will be continuing to learn and grow on the curve when they face these difficult region challenges.

One win can build the confidence. The win could come Friday night when Louisville comes in.

Panthers or other Panthers

2. Will West Lowndes make the playoffs?

West Lowndes has set its No. 1 goal as a return to the South State Class 1A playoffs.

To realistically make the playoffs, West Lowndes will need to beat French Camp, West Oktibbeha and East Oktibbeha at a bare minimum.

Thus, West Lowndes finds itself with a huge region game on the docket Friday night when defending state champion French Camp comes to town.

Tigers or Green Wave

3. Will both Noxubee County and West Point score touchdowns Friday night?

Noxubee County beat West Point 6-0 in 2012 and West Point returned the favor with a 14-6 win in 2013.

What should be an outstanding game could once again hinge on which defensive unit makes the biggest stop and gets the turnover at the right time.

Generals or Cougars

4. Will Starkville Academy start 5-0?

Once again, we come in this spot and ask the question -- Can Starkville Academy win yet again?

The Volunteers are off to an outstanding 4-0 start. Already Starkville Academy has established itself as a playoff contender with some good wins early.

Now we will see if Starkville Academy can become elite.

Magnolia Heights comes to J.E. Logan Field this week as the defending state runner-up and an identical 4-0 record.

Yellow Jackets or Falcons

5. Is Florence (Ala.) really ready?

Florence (Ala.) plays host to Starkville Friday night at the University of North Alabama.

It will be interesting to see if the Yellow Jackets have any rust after a week off.

Starkville looks to not only continue its 3-0 start but to also dominate like most Friday nights.
