The roadsters, hot rods, muscle cars and Model A”s will all strut their stuff at the East Bank of the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam Saturday in Columbus.
The Southern Cruisers Car Club”s 20th annual “Cruisin” the River” car show opens at 8 a.m., as classic, antique and just-plain-interesting cars and trucks roll into the grounds, and the public is invited to enjoy the spectacle, free of admission charge.
Family fun
“There will be lots of fun activities to view at the show,” said Gwen Rainwater, secretary of the Southern Cruisers. “There will be lots of gorgeous cars, good food and a fun downhill gravity slow drag race for the title of ”King of the Hill,” an auction and lots of other games.”
Gravity slow drag races begin at 1 p.m.
“It”s an unusual activity; two cars ”race” down the hill in neutral and roll down the hill under the momentum of the weight of the car,” explained Rainwater.
Earlier in the day, participants are busy with cake walks, commode races and valve cover races, among other activities.
Car registration
For those wanting to enter a vehicle in the show, registration is open from 8 a.m.-noon. For $25, a car owner can enter to be judged in a variety of categories including Muscle, Street Rod, Classic, Truck, Motorcycle, Rat Rod and Tuners.
All for a good cause
The Southern Cruisers Car Club is “a group of folks with a common interest in cars and car shows,” but that isn”t all they do.
“The club is big on community charities, and our proceeds go to support some great ones, including Outdoors Without Limits, which allows handicapped adults and children to participate in outdoor hunting and fishing activities,” said Rainwater. “We also support Camp Rising Sun”s camp for children diagnosed with cancer, the Area Council on Aging and their delivered meals for seniors, and we buy Christmas presents for residents at several different nursing homes,” she added.
Concessions including hamburgers, hot dogs and hot wings will be available on site Saturday at the Lock and Dam at the end of Wilkins-Wise Road in North Columbus.
“There will be an auction open to public bidding. We have lots of unique auction items, including several surprises, so everyone is invited to join us at 3 p.m. for that and the announcement of car show winners,” the secretary urged. “This is a real fun family day.”
