The community is invited to join the Boys & Girls Club of Lowndes County and the Afterschool Alliance Friday, March 11 to celebrate the importance of afterschool programs. The “Lights on Afterschool: Spring into Academic Success” event is from 6-8 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club in Columbus at 1815 14th Avenue N.
In communities today, 15.1 million children take care of themselves after the school day ends, said Ashley Taylor, AmeriCorps VISTA and Columbus Boys and Girls Club volunteer coordinator. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning, she added.
“Come and experience firsthand what the Columbus Boys & Girls Club has to offer for our youth and the community after school,” invited Taylor. The community-wide event promoting youth academic success will include activities to challenge spelling, math and science skills and more. There will be an ACT Workshop for grades 6-12.
The Boys & Girls Club focuses on three key program areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.
RSVPs for the March 11 celebration are requested by March 4 to [email protected] or by calling 662-244-7090.
