A new barbecue restaurant is opening in Starkville this summer.
The family-friendly restaurant, 1883 Smokehouse, will open in the old Penn’s Fish House location at the corner of Highway 12 and Avenue of Patriots. Penn’s closed in December after about three years of operation.
1883 Smokehouse is co-owned by Mark Welch, who also opened The Sturgis Smokehouse in downtown Sturgis. While the menu will have some similarities, the goal for the Starkville restaurant is to draw in a larger customer base.
Think homemade lemonade, limeade, root beer and blue-plate lunches to draw in workers, college students and families. At night, however, think “casual steakhouse” with pork chops, ribeye steaks and a salad bar.
The Sturgis Smokehouse, which opened in 2017, will continue operations once 1883 Smokehouse opens in Starkville. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Additionally, the hiring process will begin for the Starkville restaurant and will have openings for both the front and back of the house. For more information, email [email protected].
A retail development is coming to Academy Road in Starkville.
Fair Market and Retail, a development that will feature drive-thru restaurant access and a possible coffee shop, is being headed by Johnny Fair with the Columbus-based Fair Companies.
The Fair Companies consist of Fair Propane Gas Systems, Fair Oil Company and convenience stores, and Fair Properties, which consist of the commercial space and investment properties owned by the Fair family.
Fair could not be reached by press time. Updated information will be provided as it becomes available.
Lastly, on Russell Street, clothing store Envie Boutique has closed. Since then, it has been rebranded as the Back Porch Boutique in Mathiston.
Back Porch Boutique will be located in the old Bullard’s Gifts building at 17475 Highway 82 and will feature a larger women’s clothing selection, monogramming services, jewelry and accessories and tanning. The new location will be open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
