Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Lowndes County man who apparently killed himself after a six-hour standoff with county deputies.
Thomas Cameron Bailey, 46, died Sunday at his residence on Crowe Road, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant confirmed. Merchant has ruled his death a suicide.
One of Bailey’s neighbors called 911 shortly before 10 a.m., according to Sheriff Mike Arledge. The individual reported Bailey wasn’t acting like himself and was possibly armed.
Deputies responded to Bailey’s home and set up a perimeter, while trying to get Bailey to come out and talk to family members and specialists, Arledge said. Between 4 and 5 p.m., deputies entered the home and found Bailey already deceased.
Arledge said deputies contacted Merchant and MBI, and Merchant pronounced Bailey dead at the scene. Arledge said MBI has been called in to investigation the incident “just in case.”
“That’s just a precautionary measure, is what it is,” he said. “We don’t feel like there’s anything out of the ordinary. We didn’t fire any of our weapons or (use) any kind of force against him.
“(But) it’s better to be transparent,” he added.
MBI spokesperson Warren Strain did not answer a call from The Dispatch by press time.
