STARKVILLE -- When her final year in high school appeared on the horizon, Starkville High School senior Rainey Wells realized she wanted to continue to play soccer.
"Honestly for a while, I was thinking about just going to college," Wells said. "Then I realized this would be the end of soccer for me, that is when some things changed. I just decided I wanted to continue playing.
"It has been something I have done for like 13 years. I am happy it gets to continue."
Wells signed a scholarship offer with Itawamba Community College Wednesday.
"They have been recruiting me since my sophomore season," Wells said. "They would come to matches and all that.
"They always gave that extra effort. They really stood out to me. My time there was great. I like the campus, the players on the team. This is exciting."
Starkville coach J.T. Coward is proud of his captain.
"She has worked very hard for this opportunity," Coward said. "She is quiet as a leader, but she is great in the classroom and at practice and during matches. She leads by example."
Wells looks to grow more this season before her collegiate career begins.
"As a senior, this year is important to me," Wells said. "The coaches want me to lead more and we are working on that."
