The Mississippi State quarterbacks room got slightly more crowded Friday morning as former Penn State signal caller Tommy Stevens announced his transfer to MSU over Twitter.
Stevens, a three-star recruit out of Decatur Central in Indianapolis, Indiana, will join the Bulldogs as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. He was 24-for-41 for 304 yards and four touchdowns in 23 career games at Penn State. Stevens also added another 506 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground and 14 receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
“We look forward to Tommy joining our team and completing his final year of eligibility as a Mississippi State Bulldog,” head coach Joe Moorhead said in an MSU Athletics release. “Tommy is very talented and will be an excellent addition to our roster. He will have the opportunity to compete at quarterback this season.”
The addition of Stevens further muddies the quarterback situation in Starkville. Moorhead said this week that junior Keytaon Thompson came out of the spring as the leader for the No. 1 job but redshirt freshman Jalen Mayden and freshman Garrett Shrader had made strides behind him.
The Bulldogs will report for preseason camp Aug. 1. The first practice of the fall will occur the following day. MSU’s first game of the season is Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Lafayette in New Orleans.
