Main Street Columbus has announced an “early bird special” for those who sign up now for the 2019 Christmas Parade, set for Dec. 2.
“It may seem early to talk about a Christmas parade, but it is only three months away,” said Barbara Bigelow, executive director of Main Street Columbus, the parade organizer.
“This year’s parade will be held on the Monday following Thanksgiving, so we will not have that additional week for planning, thus starting early just makes sense,” she said. “As a special incentive, complete your application during the month of September to take advantage of the early bird special for a discount on your entry fee.”
This year’s parade theme is “Christmas Movie Magic.”
“Who doesn’t have a favorite Christmas movie?,” Bigelow asked. “Whether it be ‘The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,’ ‘White Christmas,’ ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ or ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ find your favorite and begin making plans to be part of this year’s parade.”
The parade committee, a team of community volunteers, is working diligently to make this year’s event one to remember, she continued. Individuals, children’s groups and community organizations are encouraged to take part. The parade will offer competitive and non-competitive categories.
Art contest, junior marshals
The Holiday Art Contest returns this year, for kids in grades K-5. The contest is divided into three categories. First- through third-place winners in each category will act as junior marshals of the parade, ride in a special train float and receive a cash prize. Winning artwork and artists will also be featured in local media. Contact the Main Street office for details.
“We are accepting sponsorships for the parade at this time,” said Bigelow. “Any businesses or individuals that would like to support this community parade with a sponsorship should contact Main Street Columbus.”
